"You're insane. And I know what you've done.."

Matthew 'Fletch' Fletcher is a former officer at Wentworth Correctional Centre.

Fletcher before his career in Corrective Services was a member of the army before being discharged due to Post Traumatic Stress, his stress not being controlled properly until after the resignation of Erica Davidson.

Fletcher was good friends with fellow officers Will Jackson, Linda Miles and Vera Bennett but couldn't get along with future governor Joan Ferguson who plotted to bring Matthew down after she secretly exposed Fletcher and Meg Jackson's affair which resulted in Meg's abortion.

Fletcher decided to leave Wentworth after struggling to recover from his accident. He went to a farm in Tasmania and begun life as a sheep farmer.

Time At Wentworth[]

Fletcher is an officer who believes in punishment over rehabilitation. In his view, the prisoners are there to be punished because they committed a crime. He has no interest in why they do it, and believes that they need discipline and to not have their hand held during their time in prison.

Fletcher is introduced in episode one of season one as an officer who doesn't care about the prisoners and is seen supporting Meg in her governorship, Fletcher is later seen in the episode calling for help as Meg is killed in a riot.

Later on Fletcher starts his relationship with Vera Bennett and we later learn he is a survivor of the war as he served in the military and the screams from Bea when hearing that Debbie died reminded him of his days in the army.

Season 2[]

After the resignation of Erica Davidson, Matthew went on leave in Bali to deal with his alcohol issues, he reveals that he is "completely sober" after time away from the prison.

Fletch is seen to be good friends with Will Jackson until his affair with Meg Jackson is revealed and they have a fist fight in the boiler room as a result.

Fletch is suspended from duty when Vera finds his vitamin compound in a drug baggie, and this causes Vera to lose both her friendship with Linda and Fletch as a result.

Ep 11[]

Ep 12[]

Fletch is in the staffroom and he is cleaning out his locker as Linda Miles comes in with a ton of paperwork and says that Ferguson is "losing it" and as Fletch keeps cleaning out his locker, Linda says that he picked a good time to get out and says that Walford should be a breeze after Wentworth. Linda then tells him that a few of the officers are going out for a few drinks after work and is wondering if he is going to come, Fletch says as long as Ferguson isn't going he will be there. Vera then comes in and says that Ferguson needs to see Fletch and Fletch tells Vera that as of 10 minutes ago he no longer works at Wentworth. Vera says that it is important and Fletch says that if it is a cake he is not interested. Fletch stops and he looks at Vera and says that he has just finished a double shift and he doesn't need that crap. Fletch relents and goes with Vera to see Ferguson.

Fletch knows

Fletch reveals that he knows everything from Ferguson's time at Blackmoor

In the governors office the CCTV footage of Bea making her way into the mail room is being played as Fletch says that he doesn't know how Bea got his swipe card. Ferguson says that she doesn't believe him and says to try again. Fletch says that he found his card on the floor and says that he thought he lost it, Vera says that his card was attached to his belt and Fletch says that he thought he snagged it and didn't realise it had been cut. Ferguson calls him stupid and says the police should be interested to hear about what happened. Fletch tells Ferguson that he did not help Bea escape and Ferguson says that she doesn't believe a word he is saying and Fletch says he didn't do it and asks Vera to back him up, which she doesn't. Ferguson says that she will be launching an official investigation and informing the governor of his new prison about his gross incompetence and says that will hopefully be the end of her career in corrections and to get out of the prison. Fletch leaves the office as Vera says to Ferguson that he is not incompetent and he is a good officer, Ferguson tells Vera that Fletch must give back any of his prison gear before he leaves, Vera nods and leaves.

Vera and Fletch are in a room where Fletch is returning all his officer equipment, Fletch signs off on the form and Vera says that they are done, and Fletch asks if that's it as Vera says yes Fletch dejected says that he doesn't get a proper goodbye and Vera says to him that he knows the way out. Fletch then asks Vera what happened to the old Vera as he liked her better, Vera says that she didn't and Fletch leaves the office with Vera looking on.

As Fletch is leaving Wentworth he walks through the hallways and walks past Chris Bakula who is walking with Kelly Bryant, Bakula says that he will see him tonight for the farewell drinks and Fletch says yes, then realises something. He asks Bakula where Kelly is going and Bakula says that she is being transferred to Barnhurst and Fletch asks why, Bakula replies it is what the paperwork says. Bakula goes to drive off and Fletch gets in the brawler and Bakula says that the brawler isn't a taxi and Fletch tells him to just drive.

As the brawler stops Fletch and Chris Bakula open the door as Fletch tells him to give him five minutes, Bakula closes the door and Fletch tells Kelly that she needs to tell him what she knows about Ferguson and Fletch says that he has contacts at Barnhurst that will keep her safe as Kelly says that Ferguson has contacts as well, Fletch then asks what did she do to her, and he yells at her by saying that he really needs to tell her and he grabs her in which Kelly tells him to look at her, Fletch realises that Kelly is missing an eyelid and Kelly calls him Sherlock. Fletch asks why Ferguson did it and Kelly says that it was to keep her quiet and he asks what for and Kelly reveals that she was the one who caught Ferguson with Jianna. Fletch asks who Jianna is and Kelly says it was the inmate at Blackmoor that Ferguson had fallen for. Kelly then says when Jianna had her baby taken away from her Ferguson had lost it and took it out on the inmates. Fletch asks who took the baby and Kelly says a social worker did and Fletch realises that he knows who the social worker was and then he asked what happened next did Jianna commit suicide? Kelly asks how he would know that and Fletch says that he has heard the story before.

Fletch makes his way to the governors office as Vera is talking with Ferguson and Vera says that the police have spoken with Birdsworth but they haven't gotten anywhere yet. Fletch bursts into the room and he tells Vera to get out and stunned by this she says 'Excuse me?'. Fletch then says what he is about to talk about is private and that the governor should be the only one to hear it, Ferguson tells Vera to leave and says she will deal with it, Vera leaves as Fletch slams the door closed and tells her that the situation is fucked up even for her and says that here he was thinking that she had it in for him but she had it in for Will as well and that it has pretty much always been about Will. Ferguson insults Fletch by calling him unstable and Fletch that that is rich coming from her and says that she had someone break into his house and steal his journal, breaking into Will's house, the texts, and death threats all because Will took the baby away and Fletch says that he knows all about Jianna and what she did to all the inmates, and says that she isn't a governor but a psychopath , Ferguson asks him if he really thinks so and Fletch says that he does and Ferguson says to him that he should carefully consider his next move. Fletch says that Kelly Bryant is his witness and that he is going to go straight to the board and that he will bring her down Fletch leaves. Ferguson walks over to the cabinet and opens it where she gets her phone and she makes a call.

Vera is walking with Fletch and he is telling Vera that Ferguson is playing her and she is playing everyone and he says that Ferguson tortured an inmate into silence and that she isn't right in the head, Vera says that she has heard enough and Fletch says that she hasn't heard anything yet and Vera says that a prisoner used his swipe card just hours before her escape and when he was questioned he came up with a bogus answer and she says that he will be lucky if he isn't charged, Fletch says that he has an eye witness and Vera says back that they have CCTV, Fletch argues more and says it is "chicken shit" compared to what Ferguson has done and Fletch says that the inmate he spoke to said that there was a social worker involved. Vera tells Fletch enough as an officer walks over and Vera tells him to escort Fletch out..Vera walks away as Gary (the officer) is told by Fletch he knows the way out, Fletch storms out of Wentworth into the carpark.

Fletch is outside Will's house making an urgent phone call to Will saying that he needs to talk with him urgently. As Fletch hangs up the phone he is struck by a speeding van driven by Nils Jesper.

Season 3[]

Fletcher is seen recovering from his injuries after being struck by a van in the season before, Fletcher is at a rehabilitation centre where he is visited by Vera Bennett and later Joan Ferguson.

Fletcher is invited to return to work by Derek Channing, and at first refuses, but changes his mind and returns to light duties as he couldn't afford his outstanding medical bill with the ongoing rehabilitation he had to undergo. But Vera speaks with Fletcher before and says that he needs a routine to get back into and Wentworth can offer him that. Fletcher when he returns to Wentworth has a conversation with Linda Miles who told her that he was 'back to his old self' but he wasn't really "his old self" after the accident after Linda didn't visit him in hospital, but claims that it was okay as he hated hospitals as well.

MattSeesBridget

Matt talks to Bridget about trying to remember before his accident

Later in the season Fletcher starts to remember events prior to his accident and he goes and speaks with Bridget Westfall who helps him to try and piece together bits of his life before his accident

He informs Vera that there was nothing accidental about the accident, he confides in Bridget and asks her to help him remember the events of his past, he finally remembers the events of his accident and memories prior including him having sex with Jessica Warner and tells Vera about it which inadvertently causes Vera to report Bridget and makes her resign as a result.

When Fletcher finally remembers the events of everything, he goes to Will and reveals all.

Fletcher joins forces with Bea to bring down Ferguson and is successful, Fletcher later survives an attack by Nils Jesper and shoots him in the leg as his revenge for "fucking up his life", and at the end of season 3 Fletch decides its time to resign from Wentworth.

Mention in Series 4[]

In episode 4x01 officer Will Jackson tells inmate Bea Smith that Fletcher has bought a farm in Tasmania and has become a sheep shepherd. Smith comments on his new job not being so different from the previous one, probably ironically comparing Wentworth inmates to a sheep flock. Fletch was also mentioned in season 4 when Franky was working as a legal aid and Fletch was on the list for Ferguson's upcoming court date as a witness.
